California Strawberries Bound for the People’s Republic of China
Date Published : June 27, 2016
Today, the California Strawberry Commission is pleased to announce that California strawberries have been granted market access to the People’s Republic of China. This agreement is the culmination of a diligent and enthusiastic partnership over the past ten years with representatives from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) and California strawberry industry representatives.
In August 2008, China opened its borders temporarily for California strawberries, allowing special permission for the Olympic Games in Beijing, at the athletes’ request. Then-Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger applauded the Chinese government for providing the world’s greatest athletes with healthy diet options such as California’s strawberries. Since that time, USDA and AQSIQ officials have worked with California strawberry growers and shippers to establish export protocols to assure the quality and safety of California-grown strawberries sent to Chinese consumers.
Approved suppliers expect to begin small shipments of fresh California-grown strawberries this summer. Based on successful experience with other Asian markets, by year 2 shipments are estimated to be $15 million in value annually. Over time, this market is expected to grow to $30 million or more in value.
