We all dream of better lives, for both ourselves and our children. For the past 19 years, the strawberry growers, shippers and processors right here in our community have contributed more than $1.7 million dollars to help children of strawberry field workers attend college. The California Strawberry Growers’ Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament is a day of fun that supports a step up for students who might otherwise not be able to attend college.

California Strawberry Commission Scholarship Program for Children of Farm Workers

The California Strawberry Commission is awarding a record number of annual scholarships this year to the children of strawberry farm workers who are pursuing their dreams though higher education.

From throughout the state’s strawberry growing regions, 234 students – high school graduates and those currently enrolled in trade schools and institutions of higher learning – will receive a combined total of $200,510 in scholarships for the 2013-2014 school year.

Now in its 20th year, the program has awarded more than $1.7 million to 1,487 children of California strawberry farm workers. Of the 2013-2014 scholarship recipients, 117 are from the Watsonville area, 67 from Santa Maria, 46 from Oxnard and four from Orange County.

They come from families of strawberry farmworkers but dream of being everything from cosmetologists to aerospace engineers, lawyers, teachers and counselors.

California Strawberry Commission Awards Scholarship Money to 46 Oxnard Students

California Lutheran University student Stephanie Reynoso said her biggest inspiration is her mother Noemi, who has picked strawberries in Oxnard for more than 20  years.

The 21-year-old, who juggles a part-time job as a server and a full-time school schedule, said her mother passed on the fortitude she will use to work toward a bright future.

Reynoso was among 117 students who received a share of $200,510 in higher education scholarships this year for children of strawberry farmworkers.
